UgeWorks builds custom-coded sites, so read this knowing that. It is still written to send some people to WordPress, because a business that picks the wrong one pays for it every month for years.
What each one actually is
WordPress is a content management system. You install it on a server, pick a theme, add plugins for forms, SEO, caching, security and galleries, and edit pages in a visual editor. Thousands of agencies in Chennai build on it, and for a site that publishes a lot of content it is a mature, sensible choice.
A custom-coded site is written directly in code, in our case React with TypeScript, and deployed as static files on a CDN. There is no admin login to attack, no plugin to update, no database to back up. Changes are made in code and deployed, usually by the developer.
Where WordPress wins
- You publish often. A blog, news, recipes, a portfolio you add to weekly. The editor is the product and you should have it.
- You want to edit everything yourself without a developer in the loop, including page layout.
- Budget for the first version is tight and a good theme gets you 80% of the way.
- You need a plugin ecosystem: membership, LMS, events, multilingual, WooCommerce. Somebody has already built it.
Where a custom-coded site wins
- Speed, measured. A static React site served from a CDN routinely passes Google's Core Web Vitals; a WordPress site with a page-builder theme and fifteen plugins routinely does not. Google's thresholds are 2.5 seconds for LCP, 200 ms for INP and 0.1 for CLS at the 75th percentile, and it evaluates the mobile version of the site first under mobile-first indexing.
- Nothing to patch. No plugin updates, no PHP version upgrades, no "your site has been compromised" email. Static files cannot run malware.
- Custom features are native, not bolted on. A booking flow, a configurator, a dashboard or a Razorpay checkout is written to do exactly what you need.
- No renewals. Premium themes and plugins are annual licences. Stop paying and features break. Custom code has nothing to renew.
- It is yours. Source code, hosting account and domain in your name. You can hand it to any React developer.
The honest comparison
| WordPress | Custom-coded (React) | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Content-heavy sites you edit yourself | Sales and service sites, web apps, anything custom |
| First-version cost | Usually lower | Usually higher |
| Ongoing cost | Hosting, plugin and theme renewals, updates | Hosting only, often within free tiers |
| Speed | Depends heavily on theme and plugins | Fast by default |
| Security | Needs updates and a security plugin | No server-side attack surface |
| Editing content | Anyone, in a visual editor | Developer, or a headless CMS if needed |
| Custom features | Plugins, with their limits | Written to spec |
The middle path
If you want a fast custom site *and* the ability to edit a blog yourself, the answer is a custom front end with a headless CMS behind the parts that change. You get the speed and ownership of code and a friendly editor for the content. It costs more than either alone, so only do it if you will genuinely publish.
How to decide in five minutes
- Will someone in your business edit pages every week? If yes, lean WordPress.
- Is the site mainly there to win enquiries or sell? If yes, lean custom.
- Do you need a feature no plugin does well? Custom.
- Is the first-version budget the constraint, not the running cost? WordPress.
- Are you tired of a slow, hacked or plugin-broken WordPress site? That is the website redesign conversation, and it usually ends in custom code.
Questions people ask
Is a custom-coded website bad for SEO because I cannot install an SEO plugin?
No. An SEO plugin writes title tags, descriptions, canonical links, structured data and a sitemap. A custom site has all of those written directly, and usually loads faster, which is itself a ranking factor. This site is a custom-coded React site.
Can I still have a blog on a custom site?
Yes. Either the developer adds posts as code, as the guides on this site are, or a headless CMS gives you an editor. Which is right depends on how often you will publish.
Will a custom site lock me in to one developer?
Less than WordPress does in practice. A React site is standard code any React developer can pick up, and everything is delivered in your own GitHub, AWS and domain accounts.
