You do not need to be technical to understand these three numbers, and knowing them lets you hold any developer to a measurable standard.
What they are
Google measures three things about the experience of real people visiting your site and publishes the thresholds it considers good:
- Largest Contentful Paint (LCP): how long until the main content, usually the biggest image or heading, is visible. Good is 2.5 seconds or less.
- Interaction to Next Paint (INP): how quickly the page reacts when someone taps or clicks. Good is 200 milliseconds or less.
- Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS): how much things jump around as the page loads, the effect where you go to tap a button and it moves. Good is 0.1 or less.
Google judges each at the 75th percentile of visits, separately for mobile and desktop. In plain terms: three out of four visits have to be good, and the slow phones on slow connections count.
Why a business owner should care
Two reasons. First, Google uses page experience as one of its ranking signals, and it indexes the mobile version of your site first. Second, and more directly, people leave slow pages. A visitor who came from a search or an ad and waited five seconds for your page to draw has already formed an opinion about your business before reading a word.
Check your own site in one minute
Open PageSpeed Insights, paste your address, and read the top of the report. If Google has enough real visitor data, it shows a Core Web Vitals assessment (passed or failed) from actual visits. Below that is a lab test with the same metrics. Look at mobile first; that is where most Chennai traffic is and where most sites fail. Google explains what the report contains.
Do this for your competitors too. It takes a minute each and tells you where you stand.
Why most slow sites are slow
In the sites UgeWorks is asked to fix, the causes repeat:
- Images uploaded at full camera size. A 4 MB photo scaled down by the browser is still a 4 MB download. Images should be resized, compressed and served in modern formats.
- Page-builder themes and plugin stacks. Each adds scripts and styles to every page whether that page uses them or not. This is the main reason a WordPress site with a heavy theme fails LCP and INP; see WordPress versus custom code.
- Third-party scripts. Chat widgets, several analytics tags, social embeds, ad pixels, font services. Each is a request to another server before your page is usable.
- No CDN, or slow hosting. A server in one region serving visitors everywhere, or shared hosting under load.
- Layout that loads in pieces. Images without dimensions, fonts that swap late, banners injected at the top. That is what CLS measures.
What to ask your developer
- "What is our Core Web Vitals assessment on mobile, and can you show me?"
- "Which of these three fails, and what specifically causes it on our site?"
- "What is the target after the fix, and how will we verify it?"
A good answer names the metric, the cause and the fix. "We will optimise it" is not an answer.
What a fix looks like
Sometimes it is an afternoon: compress the images, remove two unused plugins, drop a chat widget nobody uses. Sometimes the theme itself is the problem and the honest fix is a rebuild on a faster foundation. A static, custom-coded site served from a CDN passes these thresholds by default, which is why UgeWorks builds that way and measures every launch against them.
Questions people ask
What is a good PageSpeed score?
The score is a lab estimate; the Core Web Vitals assessment from real visits is what Google uses. Aim to pass all three thresholds on mobile. A high score with a failed assessment means real visitors are slower than the lab test.
My site passes on desktop but fails on mobile. Does that matter?
Yes, more than the other way round. Google indexes the mobile version first and most visitors in India are on phones. Fix mobile.
Can Core Web Vitals be fixed without rebuilding the site?
Often, if the causes are images and third-party scripts. If the cause is the theme or page builder itself, improvements are limited and a rebuild is the honest recommendation.
