A lot of good businesses in Chennai run entirely on an Instagram page and a WhatsApp Business number: home bakers, boutiques, tutors, makeup artists, caterers. Many of them are doing fine. So this guide starts from the honest position that you might not need a website yet, and then sets out exactly when you do.
What Instagram and WhatsApp are good at
- Showing work to people who already follow you. New stock, a finished bridal look, today's menu.
- Conversations. WhatsApp is how most Indian customers prefer to ask a question, confirm an order or send a payment screenshot.
- Repeat customers. Broadcast lists, status updates and stories keep you in front of people who have bought before.
- Zero cost to start. Both are free, and anyone in the business can post.
If your customers mostly come from referrals and you have more work than you can take, these may be all you need right now.
What they are bad at
Being found by strangers
When someone who has never heard of you searches Google for "birthday cake order Anna Nagar" or "blouse stitching near Mylapore", the results are Google Business Profiles and websites. Your Instagram grid rarely appears for searches like that, and a WhatsApp number never does. Social platforms are where people you already reach see you; search is where people you do not reach yet look for you.
Looking established to bigger customers
A corporate client, a wedding planner, an overseas buyer or a school ordering in bulk will look you up before they call. A proper website with your name on the domain, clear services, real work and a contact page is the signal that you are a business, not a side project. An Instagram handle alone often is not.
Owning your customers
You do not own your Instagram account; the platform does. Accounts get hacked, restricted or lost with the phone number attached. Algorithm changes can cut how many followers see a post. A website on your own domain, with enquiries coming to your own email, is the one channel nobody can take away from you.
Answering questions at 11pm
A customer who wants prices, delivery areas, sizes or turnaround times at night will either wait for your WhatsApp reply or ask someone else. A website answers the common questions and takes the enquiry while you sleep.
The line: when you need a website
You need one if any of these is true:
- You want new customers who do not already know you.
- You sell to businesses, institutions or customers outside Chennai.
- You spend hours every week answering the same questions on WhatsApp.
- You want to sell online with a proper checkout rather than payment screenshots.
- You want a Google Business Profile that links to something better than an Instagram page.
You do not have to choose
The best setup for most small Chennai businesses uses all three:
- Google Business Profile so people nearby find you on the map.
- A fast website where they decide: what you do, real work, prices or a quote form, and a one-tap WhatsApp button.
- Instagram and WhatsApp to show new work and keep talking to customers.
The website does not replace your Instagram; it sends people to it, and it catches the ones Instagram never reaches.
What a first website needs, and what it does not
It needs to load fast on a phone, say what you do and where in the first screen, show real photos of real work, list services and either prices or a clear way to ask, and make WhatsApp or calling one tap. It does not need twenty pages, animations, or an app. See what a website costs to run each year and the small business website page for what that looks like in practice.
Questions people ask
Is a Facebook or Instagram page enough instead of a website?
For keeping in touch with existing customers, often yes. For being found on Google by people who have never heard of you, and for looking established to larger clients, generally no.
Can my website show my Instagram posts?
Yes. A website can link to or feature your Instagram, so new work you post still reaches website visitors without extra effort.
Will a website replace WhatsApp orders?
It does not have to. Many small business sites exist mainly to send people to WhatsApp with a pre-filled message, and to answer the questions that would otherwise take up your evenings.
Should I sell through my website or keep taking payment on WhatsApp?
If you take a few orders a week, WhatsApp with a payment link is fine. Once orders arrive when you are not available, or you spend hours confirming them, an online store with UPI and card payments saves more time than it costs.
