What it costs to hire a web developer in India compared with the US or UK

The gap is real and it is not about quality. It is about what a developer needs to earn to live where they live.

People in London, Sydney or Austin hire developers in India for one reason, and it is not mysterious. This guide puts a real number on the gap, explains what it is made of, and sets out what you should refuse to trade away for it.

The number

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a median annual wage of 92,650 USD for web developers in May 2025, and 99,520 USD for web developers and digital designers together. That is the salary alone; an agency adds an office, sales staff, management and margin on top before it quotes you.

An engineer in Chennai with the same React, React Native and AWS skills lives comfortably on a small fraction of that, because rent, food and everything else in Chennai cost a fraction of what they cost in Seattle. The saving you see in a quote is that difference passed on. It is not a discount for lower quality; it is the cost of living where the work is done.

What the saving is made of

  • Cost of living. The largest part. Same skills, cheaper city.
  • No agency overhead. Working with an individual engineer or a very small studio removes the account manager and the office lease from your invoice.
  • A fixed price instead of hours. Indian engineers often quote a written scope at a fixed price. You pay for the outcome, not for the meeting.

What the saving is not made of: cutting corners on the code, using a template and calling it custom, or skipping testing. If a quote is a tenth of the price rather than a third, one of those is usually why.

What not to trade away

This is where offshore projects go wrong, and none of it is about the country.

  1. Ownership. Domain at your registrar, hosting in your own cloud account, code in your GitHub, app store accounts in your name and country. If a vendor wants to hold any of these "for convenience", walk.
  2. A written scope. What is included, what is excluded, what it costs, how long it takes. Vague briefs fail across a time zone in a way they might survive across a desk.
  3. Written communication. Decisions in email or a shared channel that you can read at your time, not only on calls.
  4. Proof before payment. A preview link from the first week, a demo every week, and milestone invoices you pay only when you can see the thing working.
  5. A contract. Intellectual property transfers to you in full on payment, confidentiality, payment terms. Your template or a standard one.

How to buy so the saving is real

  • Send a brief that names the pages, what each must do, who logs in, and what must connect to what. A vague brief gets a vague quote.
  • Ask for a fixed price and a timeline in writing, with exclusions listed.
  • Ask who writes the code and whether you can speak to them. If the answer is a salesperson, the saving is going to the salesperson.
  • Open the live sites in their portfolio on your phone. Slow or broken tells you about maintenance, not launch day.
  • Start small if you are unsure: one page, one feature, a two-week retainer. Then scale.

Questions people ask

Is a developer in India as good as one in the US?

Skill does not depend on the country; the same React and AWS run everywhere. What varies is the individual, so judge by live work, references and the answers to the ownership and scope questions above, not by the flag.

How much cheaper is it, roughly?

Enough that the same website usually costs a fraction of a local agency quote. The exact ratio depends on the project, so ask for a fixed written price for your actual scope rather than relying on a rule of thumb.

How do I pay a developer in India?

International bank transfer is the usual route, against milestones for a fixed-price project or monthly for a retainer. Agree the method and currency in writing before work starts.

What about time zones?

India is UTC+5:30 with no daylight saving. The UK, Europe, the Gulf, Singapore and Australia all overlap with an Indian working day; the US overlaps in the Indian evening or early morning. The time-zone guide sets out the overlap for each.
